The design life of ordinary fiber optic cable is 20 years. For other special fiber cable like submarine cables, the design life is 25 years. The main component of the optical fiber is silica, also known as quartz, rich in natural reserves, chemical properties are relatively stable. The main reasons that affect the service life of optical fiber are: (1) the existence and expansion of microcracks on the fiber surface; (2) the erosion of the optical fiber surface by water and water vapor molecules in the atmospheric environment; (3) the long-term effect of the stress remaining left from not properly laid of fiber optic cable. Because of the above reasons, the fiber mechanical strength based on quartz glass keeps decreasing and attenuation keeps increasing slowly, and finally make the fiber fracture, the stop the service life of the fiber cable.

Other than the life of fiber, service life of fiber optic connector and ferrule is also related to the working life of fiber patch cord.

Due to maintenance and normal test, optical fiber jumper and optical fiber connector always meet plug and unplug, which bring the conclusion that the plug life is the maximum number of pluggable. This conclusion is based on such a premise, within the prescribed plug/unplug times, the fiber connector has no mechanical damage in the normal condition, and the additional loss does not exceed the limit (usually the limit is 0.2dB). In fact the plug life of the fiber optic connector is generally determined by the mechanical wear of the component. At present, the plug life of optical fiber patch cord can generally reach more than 1000 times, and the additional loss is not more than 0.2dB. For the fiber optic jumper which is with slotted ceramic coupling sleeve, the crack will grow due to the existence of the ceramic material, so the static fatigue will cause the sleeve to break. According to the relevant data, the rupture probability of this kind of sleeve for 20 years is 10/4. If the screening test is 2.6 times greater than the working stress, then the fracture will not happen within 20 years.
