Optical fiber distribution frame or fiber patch panel is used for containing fiber and optical fiber connecting parts, its function is mainly used for fixing and connecting optical fiber, and installing optical fiber adapter, but also can protect the optical fiber connector, preventing them from being damaged, is a protective device.

On the market, fiber optic patch panel, like many products, have the same characteristics but also have different shapes and different specifications and each manufacturer has its own unique style and main features. So when we choose the fiber optic patch panel, the first thing we should consider is whether it is installed on the wall or rack, for horizontal system, backbone network or centralized cabling?

Generally, the optical fiber patch panel is installed in the fiber cabinet or optical fiber distribution frame, as for small one, it may be directly installed on the wall. If the fiber patch panel is used for horizontal system, its density will be relatively high, integrated fiber cabling technology can form backbone or horizontal channel in the building. When the fiber optic patch panel is used for horizontal system or centralized cabling, the fiber can be a dual-mode or four mode fiber optic cable. Backbone fiber can be multimode, single mode or hybrid fiber, and these usually use fiber patch cord to supplement network hardware.

How to choose the right fiber optic patch panel? What do we need to consider? The number and size of the optical fiber entering the fiber patch panel shall be considered so as to ensure the sufficient amount of suitable holes to accommodate the optical fiber sealing pipe. If a small package (SFF) connector is used, the 1U rack can accommodate up to 24 duplex fiber optic connectors or 48 fiber bundles.

The first thing has to be considered is the remaining fiber length, fiber cable should retain a certain length to ensure the fiber strength on the chassis of the fiber patch panel. This will prevent the fiber pulled out from the fiber distribution frame, while avoiding cable withstand high stress.

The second thing is its protective performance: the optical fiber patch panel should provide sufficient protection for the fiber patch cord, fiber optic connector and prevent accidental contact.

Finally, its applicability, the fiber optic path panel shall allow the removal of existing fiber patch cord and fiber optic adapter, and add new fiber optic jumper or fiber adapter, and it must also be able to store and identify optical fibers from horizontal or backbone cables.
